Continuous 3rd Man Passing & Finishing Drill | 4-Station Rotation with Goalkeeper

Take your team’s central combination play and finishing to the next level! In Episode 404, we expand our continuous passing framework onto a full-sized penalty area featuring dual defensive mannequins and a goalkeeper.

This drill trains quick 1-touch wall passes, 3rd-man combinations under pressure, and clinical finishing into a full-sized goalβ€”all wrapped into an explosive, non-stop 4-station rotation.

πŸ“‹ DRILL SETUP & EQUIPMENT:

  • 1 Full-Sized Goal & Goalkeeper
  • 2 Defensive Mannequins (simulating central defenders)
  • 3 Cones / Position Markers
  • Supply of footballs at the starting line (bottom-right)

πŸ”„ BALL FLOW & PLAYER ROTATION:

  1. Station 1 (Bottom Right): Plays a crisp line pass up the wing to Station 2.
  2. Station 2 (Top Right): Plays a sharp diagonal pass into the central pocket to Central Player 1.
  3. Central Player 1: Checks off the mannequin, receives, and plays a 1-touch lay-off to Central Player 2.
  4. Central Player 2: Sets up a penetrating pass into the box for Central Player 1, who finishes past the keeper.
  5. Rotation: Player 1 moves to Station 2 βž” Station 2 moves to Central Station 1 βž” Central Station 1 moves to Central Station 2 βž” Central Station 2 recovers to the main line.

🎯 COACHING POINTS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Timing the Check: The central midfielder must check away from the mannequin just as the winger receives the ball to create dynamic receiving angles.
  • Weight & Surface of Lay-off: Keep wall passes soft and cushioned on the front foot to allow fluid 1-touch continuation.
  • Body Shape: Open up when receiving on the wing to view both the passer and central movement simultaneously.
  • Clinical Finishing: Focus on placement over power when striking on the move against an active goalkeeper.
