This 3-Pass Pattern Creates A Free Shot Every, Single, Time
Tired of your strikers never getting a clean shot? Your team plays nice football but can’t create a real chance? This drill fixes that instantly.
With just 3 passes, perfect pre-movement and timing, you create a FREE SHOT from the ball-receiving zone. No complicated tactics, just pure timing and movement. Works from U13 to senior level and you can set it up in 30 seconds.
In this video I show you exactly how to coach it, what to look for, and the mistakes that kill the exercise.
π SETUP
- Cones: 4 cones to mark passing gates + ball receiving zone
- Players: At least 5 players (3 in action, rest rotating)
- Balls: At least 3 balls at Player 1 (this keeps tempo high!)
- Goal: 1 full size goal + 1 goalkeeper
β½ HOW IT WORKS – STEP BY STEP
- Pass 1: Player 1 starts with the ball and plays to Player 2.
- Pre-movement & Return: Player 2 makes a pre-movement (check away, then into the ball), controls, and plays back to Player 1.
- Long Pass: Player 1 does the same pre-movement, controls, and plays a long pass towards the cone.
- Deep Run: Player 2 is already running to that cone, controls the ball, and takes it forward.
- Diagonal Ball: Player 2 plays diagonally into the ball-receiving zone.
- Finish: Player 3 sprints at FULL SPEED into the zone, controls, and finishes on goal.
π Rotation:
Player 1 becomes Player 2 $\rightarrow$ Player 2 becomes Player 3 $\rightarrow$ Player 3 takes the ball and goes to the starting point. Goalkeeper stays.
π COACHING POINTS FOR COACHES
- Demand the pre-movement: No lazy checking. The fake away is what creates the space.
- Timing of Player 3 is everything: He should NOT run too early. He goes the moment Player 2 touches the ball for the long pass.
- Keep three balls at Player 1: If you lose tempo, you lose the exercise.
- First touch is forward, not to the side: You want to play that diagonal with your second touch.
π― PLAYERS – FOCUS ON THIS
- Check your shoulder before you receive. Know where the cone and goal are.
- First touch forward β attack the space.
- Player 3 β attack that ball-receiving zone at full sprint. You’re not jogging, you’re creating a free shot.
π‘ WHY THIS WORKS
Most teams defend flat. This pattern pulls the centre-back out with Player 2’s movement, then the diagonal behind him is completely open. The defence can’t shift quick enough. That’s why you get a free shot every time if timing is right.
β οΈ COMMON MISTAKES
- Player 3 starts too early: Offside and no space.
- No pre-movement: Defender stays tight and intercepts.
- Only 1 ball: Players waiting, intensity drops.
π₯ VARIATIONS TO TRY
- Add a defender on Player 2 to make pre-movement realistic.
- Limit to 2 touches max for faster play.
- Change ball-receiving zone to left/right side.
- Finish with first-time shot only.
