Looking for a high-repetition training session that links sharp midfield combinations with attacking output? In Episode 402, we break down the “Continuous Passing & Finishing Drill: The 4-Station Triangle Rotation.”
This exercise builds directly on our previous triangle passing patterns but adds two crucial match-realistic elements: defensive mannequins to simulate central pressure and a mini-goal for a clinical first-time finish.
Because it’s a continuous loop across 4 stations, your players will get maximum touches, fluid fitness conditioning, and constant decision-making practice with zero standing around in long lines.
π DRILL SETUP & EQUIPMENT:
- 3 Cones / Markers
- 2 Mannequins (or tall cones to simulate central defenders)
- 1 Mini-Goal
- A steady supply of footballs at the starting station
π THE 4-STATION ROTATION PATTERN:
- Top-Right Line passes down the line and rotates to the Bottom-Right cone.
- Bottom-Right plays a square pass and becomes the new Central Player.
- Central Player lays off the wall-pass (kaats) and rotates to the Bottom-Left cone.
- Bottom-Left delivers the diagonal breakthrough pass and sprints to join the back of the starting line.
π― COACHING POINTS FOR SUCCESS:
- Timing of the Movement: The central player must check away from the mannequins to create space at the exact moment the ball travels to the bottom-left.
- Weight of Pass: Ensure the cross-field ball is crisp, but the central lay-off is soft enough to set up a first-time forward pass.
- Game Realism: Do not let the ball or the players touch the mannequins. Keep it sharp!
- Clinical Finish: Replicate match pressure by encouraging a first-time shot into the mini-goal.
