Square Passing & Movement Drill | Speed of Play Training
This square-based passing and movement drill is designed to improve speed of play, awareness, and decision-making. Players must constantly scan, time their runs, and adjust their body position while combining around mannequins inside the square.
The exercise encourages:
Quick passing and clean first touches
Off-the-ball movement and creating passing angles
Scanning before receiving
High tempo ball circulation
Communication and timing
How it works:
Players are positioned around a square with mannequins acting as passive defenders
The ball is played into the middle player, who sets and moves to receive again
After each pass, players follow their pass and rotate positions
The drill can be progressed with one-touch play or directional rules
Coaching points:
Open body shape when receiving
Pass with the correct weight and timing
Constant scanning before and after the pass
Accelerate after passing
Perfect for youth to senior players and ideal for warm-ups or main training blocks focusing on possession and combination play.
